Minebusters understanding is they propose to use 20 tonnes of dynamite a day and it is acknowledged that 1 tonne of discharge will land on the quarry floor. Don't forget-Highlands water management plan is to pump the water up from the quarry floor and reinject it into local drinking water. Presumably it will include the 1 tonne of discharge. Also, Highlands doesn't have a permit to store the blasting material, so it will need to be trucked there daily. 20 tonnes of dynamite competing with 7,200 trucks a day on County Road 124 and oh yeah, our school buses. 20 TONNES a DAY.

MP's OPPOSE QUARRY
"Frank Valeriote added his voice Thursday to the chorus opposing a mega-quarry proposed for 60 kilometres north of Guelph.
Highland Companies, which is backed by a U.S. hedge fund, has submitted an application to dig a massive open-pit mine in Melancthon Township, near Shelburne.
“The reports I’ve read describe the Highland Companies’ mining application as being inadequate and deficient,” the Guelph MP said in a news release calling on the provincial Ministry of Natural Resources to “do the right thing and deny their application.”

OPTIMISM-CUP HALF EMPTY OR HALF FULL

Yes, yes indeed, I would suggest that Highlands is in crisis as things aren't going so swimmingly for them.
This quote in an article in the Banner is an indication of the "new" direction that Highlands seems to be taking:
"The company’s spokesperson, Lindsay Broadhead, said they are aware of the public’s concerns regarding the quarry’s impact on local culture.
It is important to reiterate that this process is not over. We welcome public scrutiny and feedback on the company’s plan including suggestions about how cultural and heritage concerns can be addressed,” Broadhead said in an email."
Except, according to The Highland Company’s cultural heritage assessment, the cultural landscape has “little integrity in composition and visual character.
An astute reader of the article (Mulmurgal) commented as follows: It seems Highland's new spokesperson from Hill and Knowlton hasn't read the 3,000-page application from her PR firm's newest client. Highland has stated the cultural landscape has "little integrity in composition and visual character." And yet Lindsay Broadhead now claims Highland wants suggestions on how cultural and heritage concerns can be addressed. She should start by asking her new client why it has demolished about 30 farmhouses and barns on its property. Some of those homes dated back to the 1800s and were fine examples of the region's cultural and heritage value. Here's a question for Ms. Broadhead. Isn't it too late for Highland to be open to public scrutiny and feedback on cultural and heritage concerns when it has already destroyed much of the rich agricultural heritage in the Hills of Headwaters? Congratulations to the artists for revealing yet another example of Highland's hypocrisy.

So to be fair, lets reiterate the poll results.

MANTRA-WE MUST REMAIN NEUTRAL
The must remain neutral mantra was recently re-iterated by Melancthon’s Deputy Mayor at the AWARE meeting held in Alliston, Ontario on June 25.
I guess Melancthon must operate under different legislation than Hamilton, who opposed the Flamborough pit from the very day the first tree was felled.
And different rules than Oshawa, who just reaffirmed its position against an ethanol plant being located at its harbour.
The City officially passed a resolution this week stating it does not want a plant located at the harbour beside the Second Marsh. That resolution was endorsed by Durham Regional Council Wednesday.

Quarry licence ‘premature’: MOE
The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) received more than 2,000 letters of concern regarding The Highland Companies’ plans for a Melancthon quarry, but none may carry more weight than one sent by the Ministry of the Environment (MOE).
In its letter dated April 26 — the final day of the Aggregate Resources Act’s (ARA) commenting period — the MOE raises concerns about the application, questioning surface water implications and the findings of the company’s environmental impact studies.
“It is our position that the reports failed to demonstrate a three-dimensional understanding of the geology, hydrogeology, and hydrology of the site,” the MOE letter states.
Later in its letter, the MOE notes its expectations for a thorough groundwater recharge study had not been met at that time....

Walking worried Signs saying Stop. Horrendous Honeywood,
Mistaken Melancthon
Contacting companies.
Considerate councils, Dangerous demolitions,
Burning barns. Horrible Highland Destroying dreams,
Facing farmland. Wanting water, Aware actions Terrible tasks.
Respecting rows,
Lasting a lifetime, Optimistic obstacles. Empty everywhere,
No need,
Growing greedy.
Making mistakes
Panicking people, Questionable quarry.

SUMMER HOMEWORK
School is out for the summer.
Time to take it easy or even take a vacation.
Here is your summer homework.
1) If you don't have a Stop the Quarry sign-buy one
2) Take the wire frame and store it for later
3) Take the plastic sign part, fold it neatly and put it in your suitcase with you on your travels
4) Take a picture of the Stop the Quarry sign at notable landmarks, buildings, sites, addresses on your trip
5) Post them on the facebook site Stop the Quarry
Wonder how many towns, provinces, countries we can expose to the cause?
Rules of engagement:
Do NOT tresspass
Do NOT harrass
Do NOT do anything that will cause problems for the cause
Be polite and be respectful and
HAVE FUN!!

NOR'EASTER
Nor'easters can be devastating and damaging, just ask the ratepayers to the east of Melancthon!
So while the answer MAY be blowing in the wind, ANY chance of being re-elected, or even accepted in the community has been lost.
