Isn't it ironic that this blog is launched on Earth Day, when Ontario is facing one of the biggest environmental disasters in the history of the province. The Highland Companies has amassed more than 7,000 acres of prime agricultural land in the Township of Melancthon in the County of Dufferin with the intention of aggregate extraction by way of an OPEN PIT MINE. The location of this proposed mine is the filtration system for most of the Province of Ontario's water system, the Niagara Escarpment is located here and as well, part of the lands have been designed as a world biosphere.
Currently this land, with its specialty soil, produces 50% of all the potatoes consumed in Ontario. When this mine is in full production and the agricultural land is taken out of production, local 100 mile food initiatives will have to remove potatoes from their diet.
The limestone in places extends 200 feet below the surface and is well below the water table. That doesn't mean if your well is higher than 200 feet you won't be impacted. EVERYONE in the watershed will be impacted in some way.
