Statement from Minister of the Environment John Wilkinson Regarding Highland Companies Proposed Quarry in Dufferin County

September 1, 2011

"After careful consideration, the Minister of Natural Resources and I have agreed to bring forward a regulation making Highland Companies subject to the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act. As a result, the company will be required to undertake a comprehensive Environmental Assessment for the proposed quarry in Melancthon Township.

Ministry of the Environment officials have thoroughly examined the technical reports which were submitted by the quarry proponents. Based on a review of those reports and because of the unique nature of the Melancthon quarry proposal, I believe a full Environmental Assessment is necessary.

The McGuinty government is committed to protecting our water and our environment. Today's decision ensures that a transparent and independent assessment of the environmental impacts of Melancthon quarry proposal will be conducted."

This was Highlands official response to the news:

  1. Not to be a party pooper, but considering Highland has Genivar tied up and their hands up everybody else's behind, do you think it is possible to get an independent and impartial review? Is there anybody out there they haven't bought and more importantly how do we insure that that is who the ministry chooses? Can we start pushing for that in the media?

  2. Thank you NDACT and close supporters. It is because of you that we have an E.A. I better not see any smarmy faced politicians taking credit for this incredible feat.
    Again, thank you.

  3. Hey September 2 @ 7:12-clearly you missed Goldhawk today then because there was a Melancthon politican going on and on about what Council has done (like call for an EA about the end of July after it was SAFE to do so) and not once did I hear a thanks from that politican to the grassroots organization who has been on this since DAY ONE.

  4. You know what folks? A lot of people have been proactive from the outset. Let's just lose the whole congratulatory thing and leave ownership, arrogance and self importance to the proponents.

  5. I'm going to amend what I posted at 8:17. Not a lot but, rather, some. The rest stays the same.

  6. Hey 8:17, good idea about leaving the ownership and arrogance and self importance to the proponents, could you tell that to Melancthon council?

  7. Tell it to everybody.

  8. The founding members of NDACT have never shown arrogance, and as a resident of Melancthon, I do not find it self congratulatory to say "thank you."
