MELANCTHON COUNCIL WINS FOODBANK CHALLENGE BUT LOSES THE OPTICS WAR (AGAIN)

THE ENTIRE ARTICLE TO GO WITH THIS PICTURE IS IN ITALICS BELOW.

I DIDN'T LEAVE OUT THE PART WHERE MELANCTHON COUNCIL THANKED ANYONE BUT HIGHLANDS, SO PRESUMABLY NO ONE BUT HIGHLANDS DONATED......

"In the battle between Mulmur and Melancthon, the latter came out on top in the Food Bank Challenge this year.

The township managed to collect 2,520 lbs. of non-perishable food items, which were delivered to the Shepherd’s Cupboard Food Bank in Shelburne on Dec. 16.

Melancthon officials gave a special thanks to the Highland Companies for its generous donation to the cause.

  1. So let me get this straight: You have an American company that wants to turn your township into a giant festering hole of dust and explosions that will poison your air and water and turn the area into hell on earth, but if they donate a few dry goods you pose happily and thank the company profusely? Maybe Highland/Baupost WAS right about us. We're cheap as hell.

  2. This Christmas propaganda, free to Baupost courtesty of the Council we pay for, is an insult to every family who donates to the foodbank, some of which are only one hydro-bill away from NEEDING the foodbank themselves. Their gift means so much more. Where is their "thank you," Mr. Mayor? Remember the story of the old widow woman who quietly dropped her last coins into the collection plate for the poor, while the corporate big wigs made a BIG SHOW of a donation that meant NOTHING to their comfort or well being? Smarten up Councillors. Take Highland's damn money, feed the hungry, but thank the people of Melancthon;some of them may actually suffer this Christmas because they had the heart to share with others. And guess what? They don't get free adversting for their businesses. I would really like to know who approved this insult to the ratepayers. Thanks for the Christmas present Council, there is nothing better than a kick in the face.

  4. Minebuster, you are such a Grinch. Someday we will all be sitting at the edge of the quarry, choking on dust, drinking toxic sludge, and eating tuna fish from tins donated by Highland and we'll be so grateful for their thoughtfulness and generosity. I, for one, applaud their benevolence this Christmas and can hardly wait for their sponsored tractor pulls at the bottom of the quarry some day in the future...

  5. What the hell were they thinking? Highlands gives to the foodbank every year, it is on their website as one of the community good deeds they do so it wasn't like by Council saying thanks but no thanks to Highlands that the foodbank wasn't going to get the donation. Honest to Christ what a slap in the face to every single person who is working to stop highlands by writing letters, signing petitions, buying signs, attending functions and fundraisers. But then the Mayor wouldn't know that, he doesn't show up to those events, too political for him.

  6. Well, I don't get this, what the hell! One wants to believe this council has a plan to work for the people in this community, but this.... this is the last straw! It's ridiculous, nay, it's appalling.

  7. Hey 12.13 for those of us who used to attend Council meetings, sadly it is just business as usual for the previous Council AND this one.

  8. As someone who needs the support of the foodbank let me say that you people disgust me. Wait until you have no income and children to feed, then tell me that Highland and everyone else who contributed doesn't deserve a thank you. I don't see anyone other than Highland in this community trying to make new jobs. For shame.

  9. Think you're missing the point, 2:46 p.m. I contributed lots of items to the foodbank, why didn't I get a thank you, just like Highland? Is my contribution any less valuable?

You almost had me feeling badly for you, until your line "I don't see anyone other than Highland in this community trying to make new jobs".

Guess you're missing a LOT of points.

  11. Ah 4:32, a true believer...

  12. I suspect 2.46 is a plant and their story is contrived, but if not, they should be aware that those who are criticising are those who have volunteered their time, money, food, and labour to the food bank for many years. We are not oblivious to the needs of our community,we are the community! But, our Council is giving free advertising to a company that is killing our township. Is that what we pay them to do? And, as someone who has worked at the food bank, I can tell you, it served those in need before the Highland Companies crawled into town and it will fill that need after they are gone... we will see to it. And many small businesses in this area do create new jobs, but many, which are agriculturally or recreationally based, will be finished if Highland gets its way. Times are difficult, even frightening. Sometimes I worry about needing the food bank for my own family. Yet, I will continue to heavily criticize this Council for issuing thoughtless and foolish propaganda for an evil corporation fronting for an American hedge fund that has been proven to care no more for Americans than they do for Canadians. They are known as a "vulture" fund for one reason, they will eat anything...including Melancthon, if it makes them a buck. If your situation is real, reach out to your neighbours, because Highlands will not have a job for you or anyone else...unless you are really, really good at blowing things up or driving a tractor the size of a house. And those jobs will be contracted out and gone before they are ever advertised here.

  13. Critize all you like folks but apparently no one else brought food in, no one. Not one big hearted Melancthonite dropped off a simple can of beans. I do not agree with thanking the enemy but alot of people were fed this holiday.

  14. Hey 9.09, Highlands would have made the SAME donation to the foodbank and the same people would have been feed. But then I heard
Mayor Bill would have done anothing not to lose to the Mulmur DM even buy all the food himself. Thank you one and all dear Highlands for making our Mayor not have lose or be wrong.

  15. 9:09 am Maybe the "big hearts" in Melancthon didn't support our Mayor's stupid bet, because God knows he has nothing else he could be doing, like saving our township from corporate rapists, but, it does not mean we did not or have not supported the foodbank! Our church alone raised $800 cash last week and bushels of food, specifically for the foodbank AND many of the key volunteers at the foodbank are from Melancthon. I could name them, but they wouldn't want the public recognition, they volunteer their time quietly...for the love of their neighbours.
