WORD ON THE STREET

Word on the street about the Aggregate Resource Act review hearings today....Mayor Bill Hill came out very strong.
“In closing, I would like to suggest that those that support the concept of a mega quarry take a short drive up the road to our Township. I will personally introduce you to the multi-generational farmers who are concerned and worried for their future and livelihood as they have not sold out. I will introduce you to the business owners who have seen their business decline because they may deal with one side or the other of the quarry issue. I will show you where 30 homesteads once stood that have been torn down to make room for the quarry. I will introduce you to Women’s Institute Members who have challenges rounding up support and pies for their long standing “strawberry suppers”. All this, before a shovel has hit the ground. It is easy for some to support a concept that will not impact them or their Community.” Bill Hill, letter to Standing Committe on General Government, May 14, 2012

Kudos and thanks very much.

I once heard someone (Carl Cosack) comment on this issue and our local Councils, "If you lead, we will follow".

I am going all Pied Piper on Mayor Hill right now!!

Oh my God, I do believe I have a heart.

Who knew?

Quarry, turbines= red herring= attempt to back paper/obsolete growth model/mantra with land hard asset standard (a la gold, oil) and lobbied ownership "rights" (aka water, minerals, bedrock...)= fear= increased world price of those same land assets= World Bank, IMF, privateers including Baupost= keeping growth model, polarized wealth, Pied Pipers, Mayors, Santa Claus... and all us little Guinea Pigs spinning our wheels. It ain't about farm land and water folks. We are pathetic.

Kermit-I really don't think 2,300 acres of land in the entire world is going to create a panic on wall street.

  3. You'd be right except that 2300 acres is just one example of what is owned not by you or me. You're exactly right that it won't create a panic on Wall Street. That's the intention!

Kermit, good for you. You see there is a bigger "game". You can refuse to play and lose by default, or you can beat them at their own rules and kick ass. The Choice is Clear.

There is no quarry! That's not what's afoot. Be outraged about the fabrication of the concept and what that perpetuates. That's the crime being perpetrated.

Even if there is no quarry this has galvanized the community and the world to change the Aggregate policies in Ontario and to protect the very rare and limited prime agricultural land here. If that drives the price of the land up, so be it, at least there will not be another gaping hole in the world, slowly filling with water over 50 years. And when the change in the aggregate policies come (not IF but WHEN) those in the industry have Baupost to blame, I mean thank.
